ABOUT MAYFIELD VINEYARD

BEAUTIFULLY RICH HISTORY & OUTSTANDING COOL CLIMATE WINES

Once a haven for pioneers, gold-seekers and graziers, Mayfield estate near Orange is renowned for a beautifully rich history and outstanding cool climate wine. The history of Mayfield dates back to 1815 when explorer, William Charles Wentworth, was granted the property as a reward for being the first to cross the Blue Mountains in 1813.

Mayfield was transferred to well-known cattle, sheep and horse breeder, Thomas Icely, in 1840. The Gold Rush began in 1851 in the area with William 'Parson' Tom discovering the first payable gold in Australia at nearby Ophir.

During the 1900s, the property was owned and run by the famous Scottish biscuit maker, Thomas Crawford. At their peak, the Crawfords were the largest privately owned biscuit manufacturer in Britain. The family ran sheep and set about creating a village atmosphere, building The School House (now the Mayfield Cellar Door) to educate the Scottish workers’ children. The property was transferred between the Crawford brothers in the late 1920s when financial difficulty plagued them.

When James S.R. Crawford died, his widow Margaret remained at Mayfield. Margaret spent 65 years on the estate and her everlasting gift to Mayfield was the arboretum with more than 50 species of trees, many now more than 100 years old.
